Art Appreciation Journal With Vintage Aesthetic

Homework Hashtag: #kcavintagejournal

In this class, I will be showing you how I repurpose my calligraphy artworks – that are sometimes scattered and under appreciated after being posted on Instagram – into cutouts for beautiful journal pages. Additionally, I will also use my journal for memorable quotes, combine them with small ephemera like old movie tickets and decorate them with stickers, washi tapes and old papers. I will show you my favorite tools and how I make layouts to make it look balanced. This way, by flipping pages, I can go down memory lane and appreciate my creations in a new way.

Note: I won’t be teaching calligraphy, but you can write in normal handwriting or cursive, using fountain pens or any of your favorite tools.

Materials Needed

Basic Tools:

  • Notebook. My favorite is size Regular Slim from Goodinkpression this way I can put into Travelers Notebook leathercase, but you can also use A5 size for more space.
  • Fountain Pen / Gel Pen / Brush Pen / Pointed Pen and ink; whichever is your preferred method of writing. It can be fun and playful/ my favorite Fountain pens are from Laban & TWSBI. Brush Pens from Pentel, and vintage colors gel pens from Sarasa.
  • Scissors, Glue Stick, Double Sided Tape
  • Bone folder (will be great to have, but it's not a must)

Decorative tools:

  • Washi tape, preferably with floral
  • Girls stickers
  • Wooden Stamps
  • Inkpad; my favourite is Shachihata Iromoyo Note : You can find these on Journaling shop; there are many available on Etsy like this one https://www.etsy.com/shop/Journalland Or you can purchase from these sites: https://www.niconeco.com/ they have a shop in New York and they ship all over. https://papergame.co/ *not affiliate link
  • Pages from an old book, especially ones that are already yellowed, the older the better. You can also use old newspaper or old magazine, just avoid anything with glossy paper. An alternative method is to purchase scan old book on Etsy; you can find many listed by searching "Printable old book" so you can reprint from home as many as you want.
  • Handmade paper, coloured paper, or any kind of paper that has texture or a decorative element
  • Any kind of old memorable things like movie tickets, plane tickets, receipts with pretty logos, memorable purchases that you want to keep; they can all add a pretty organic vintage look to your journal.
